Exhibition of works by Eduardas Juchnevičius and Martynas Juchnevičius “Double Code”

From 6 August to 5 September 2026, the Šiauliai Art Gallery presents “Double Code”, an exhibition of works by the father-and-son artist duo Eduardas Juchnevičius (1941–2011) and Martynas Juchnevičius.

Eduardas Juchnevičius (1941–2011) was one of the most distinguished Lithuanian printmakers, painters, and poets of the second half of the twentieth century, earning recognition both in Lithuania and on the international stage. He is best known for his highly individual linocuts, characterized by expressive forms, symbolic imagery, grotesque elements, and masterful compositional balance. In 1986, he was awarded the Grand Prize at the Tallinn Graphic Triennial, alongside numerous prestigious distinctions in Lithuania and abroad. His works are preserved in the collections of Lithuania’s leading art museums. Juchnevičius’s art invites not merely observation but reflection. In his works, history merges with imagination, myth intertwines with everyday life, and the human figure emerges as both protagonist and witness. Central to his artistic vision are themes of colective memory, freedom, moral responsibility, ethical choice, and spiritual resilience. Rich in symbolism, his compositions often combine dramatic narratives with subtle irony, while their expressive visual language lends them remarkable emotional power. Each work unfolds as an autonomous story in which past and present converge, offering a timeless meditation on humanity and the age in which it lives.

Martynas Juchnevičius (b. 1971) is a London-based Lithuanian artist who combines the precision of graphic art, the dynamism of animation, and the aesthetics of Pop Art. After beginning his career as an animator in Lithuania, he continued his work at Varga Studio in Budapest. Over more than two decades, he has worked on international productions including Mr. Bean, Angry Birds Toons, Captain Sabertooth, and Pettson and Findus, collaborating with The Walt Disney Company, Tiger Aspect Productions, Happy Life Animation, Passion Pictures, and National Geographic. His international animation career naturally evolved into a distinctive artistic practice. The Pop Art Iconography series presented in this exhibition merges portraiture and caricature into a bold, graphically balanced visual language. Precise linework, strong composition, and an almost sculptural treatment of form enable the artist to capture not only the likeness of his subjects, but also their character and inner energy. Martynas’ portraits celebrate iconic figures from the worlds of cinema, art, music, and sport whose achievements have left a lasting mark on global culture. The Pop Art Iconography series has received international recognition and led to a collaboration with Hal Leonard Europe, one of Europe’s leading music publishing companies. Although Martynas Juchnevičius has developed a distinctive artistic language of his own, his work shares with that of his father, graphic artist Eduardas Juchnevičius, a deep respect for graphic discipline, strong draftsmanship, and compositional clarity.
