From 12 September to 3 October 2026, the Šiauliai Art Gallery will present “At the Level”, an exhibition of installations and drawings by Latvian artist Kate Seržāne.
The exhibition opening will take place on Saturday, 12 September, at 2 p.m. Admission will be free during the opening event.
“Our genetic bond with nature is innate and unbreakable. Nature seems to invite us, to entice us to embrace a tree, talk to the sea or simply plunge a hand into the earth. To feel something and surrender to something. It is a time for inner work, a burst of creative energy. You have to do what you do best, because not doing it is impossible. It is like an endless dive: the deeper you go, the more thrilling it becomes. Splash!” — Kate Seržāne.
The artist is well known for works inspired by nature, particularly the world of water. She slipped into this world almost without noticing. The works presented in “At the Level” are united by an exploration of the water’s surface. At the heart of this exploration lies a sense of being, which Kate seeks to capture and expand, opening each work up to broader interpretations.
Her large-format charcoal and sepia drawings convey the vibrations of water: the touch of wind and light upon its surface, its movement, flow and rhythm. The works are precise, compelling and deeply felt. The exhibition also features smaller mixed-media works depicting life beside, above and on the water, including occasional drawings of fish. Yet, by immersing herself in the world of fish and in the water without which they cannot live, the artist has found herself in far deeper waters – both literally and figuratively.
In 2006, Kate Seržāne received a master’s degree in graphic art from the Art Academy of Latvia. Although Kate is rooted in traditional graphic art, her artistic ambitions often extend beyond the boundaries of the discipline to include performance. When she draws, she is in her element – like a fish in water!
