GUOSTAGALIS STONE, CALLED "DEVIL'S CHAIR"

Pakruojis district

In about 1 km northwest from Guostagalis, on the road of Degesiai, in the southeastern corner of the forest Laumenis there is a massive grey stone. The stone is 2.5m long and 2m wide and 1m high. It has a notched groove like the back of a chair. Earlier there was a huge swamp called Velniabala near it.

It is said that the devil sat on this stone at night and smoked a pipe. It is believed that for those passing by, the devil offered to exchange pipes and tobacco. If someone was tempted by the offer, when he came home he found only a branch of a tree instead of an expensive pipe and a handful of decayed leaves instead of tobacco.

During the period of serfdom, serfs were beaten on that stone.
