MONUMENT TO THE GRAND DUKE OF LITHUANIA KĘSTUTIS

Monuments and sculptures

There are very few monuments to Grand Duke Kęstutis in Lithuania. There is little knowledge about the monument. It is known that the monument was erected on the 550th anniversary of the death of Kęstutis in 1932 near the now defunct Alsiai village primary school. The author is A. Kazlauskas, the then head of the school and a self-taught folk artist. The monument was made of concrete and plaster, with 2 wolf figures on a pedestal next to the monument. The inscription on the monument reads: "In honour of Kęstutis Kęstutis 1382 - 1932 Alsiai Primary School. A. Kazlauskas with his pupils and their parents erected this monument in 1932." In 1977, when the village of Alsiai became empty, the school was closed and demolished. In July 1982, it was moved to Kivyļi Park, but was poorly visible there. In 1991 it was moved by the artist S. Adomaitis to the road Naujoji Akmenė - Medemrodė, in the centre of the village of Kivyļi, and restored.
