Five kilometres northeast of Papilė, in the village of Šaltiškiai, Šaltiškiai clay quarry extends. In the early Triassic, 250 million ago, desert climate hovered here. Alluvial deposits accumulated in the sinking plains then. Over millions of years, the decomposing biotite and hornblende minerals were releasing iron giving a red colour to these layers. According to scientists, the images resemble the panoramas of Mars space stations.
