A VISUAL CHRONICLE OF THE CITY

The year 2026 is exceptional for Šiauliai as the city celebrates its 790th anniversary. For this reason, the third annual Šiauliai city photography exhibition “Résumé‘3” places strong emphasis on photographic representations of the city.

Photography stands out for its power of memory, its ability to tell visual stories, to revive the past, and to allow us to re-experience what has been forgotten. Thus, the photographic image becomes an essential condition for understanding the identity of the city, as well as reflecting on and experiencing it.

This exhibition features numerous images of city life from the past three decades, clearly revealing social and urban transformations. Through them, we gain a deeper understanding of the changes in our living environment, the direction of the city’s development, and shifts in our personal surroundings. From this perspective of visual urban storytelling, the meaning of the present becomes clearer—this is one of photography’s greatest contributions.

A significant part of the exhibition is dedicated to the dramatic works of the late and highly talented photojournalist Giedrius Baranauskas (1968–2023). In collaboration with the editorial team of the weekly Šiaulių kraštas, the exhibition highlights the lasting artistic and documentary value of his photographs and their importance for the study of the city’s history. To further present his legacy, an additional exhibition is held at the newspaper’s art space.

The visual drama of city life is also reflected in the works of Arūnas Vileikis, Algimantas Puodžiūnas, Regina Šulskytė, Vidmantas Patamsis, Aleksandras Ostašenkovas, and Juozas Bindokas. On the same weekend, the Šiauliai Photography Museum will present two exhibitions, dedicated to artistic explorations of the city’s visuality. Gallery „Laiptai” will present the exhibition „Urbo Grafija” by Andrius Lamauskas. Such a broad scope of events is essential for shaping the photographic identity of Šiauliai—it helps establish a new format for a photography week and brings together the city’s creative forces, promoting the dissemination of photography and its impact on the city’s image.

An image is not only history. The contribution of contemporary creators will be visible in current artistic practices, original series, and explorations of new visual languages. Mindaugas Lukošaitis, Andrius Mačiūnas, Ramunė Bernotaitė, Daiva Šeibelienė, Laurynas Nevidonskis, Giedrius Šiukščius, the collective “Bildukai” curated by Rolandas Parafinavičius, and other participating artists seek new ways to speak visually about the relationship between time and place. They explore emotional and metaphysical possibilities of the image and continue urban narratives through different optical registers.

The aim of “Résumé‘3” is not only to present history. Equally important is the encouragement of individual explorations of pure artistic forms. Therefore, a separate part of the exhibition is dedicated to innovative approaches to image interpretation, where photography transcends its medium and becomes sculpture, installation, personal confession, or even a deep sigh.

Laisvūnas Karvelis, Marius Žalneravičius, Jovita Ratnikienė, Geistė Marija Kinčinaitytė, Andrius Mačiūnas, Andrius Lamauskas, Bronius Rudys, Dainius Trumpis, and others expand the boundaries of photography and mark new possibilities for the medium.

“Résumé‘3” encourages not only the expansion of content but also the geographical spread of events. On the opening day, media artist Augustė Tomkutė invites audiences to the evening opening of her exhibition in the alternative art space “Garažas.”

Let us prepare for a meaningful celebration of photography in Šiauliai—rich encounters and visual experiences of the city. Let us be active witnesses to the birth of a new photographic tradition.
