ŠIAULIAI TURNS 790: JOIN THE BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS AND DISCOVER A CITY YOU WILL WANT TO RETURN TO

Do you enjoy birthday celebrations? If so, we look forward to welcoming you to Šiauliai from 10 to 13 September. This year, the City of the Sun is celebrating an exceptional milestone – its 790th anniversary – turning the entire year into one grand celebration. On the second weekend of September, the city will host one of its biggest annual events, Šiauliai Days 790. Concerts, artistic performances, Tourism Street, an arts and crafts fair, a variety of entertainment, new flavours and a festive atmosphere will fill the city.

Yet Šiauliai is worth visiting for much more than its birthday celebrations. This is a wonderful opportunity to explore one of Lithuania’s oldest cities – a place full of record-breaking achievements and unexpected discoveries, artistic highlights and distinctive symbols, engaging attractions and a warm, welcoming rhythm of life.

If you are a museum lover, you will be spoilt for choice. The Photography Museum – the only one of its kind in Lithuania – invites you to see the world from inside a camera. The Cat Museum surprises visitors with thousands of exhibits and its live four-legged residents, while the interactive Balts’ Cultural Awareness Centre “The Balts’ Road” allows you to discover history through play.

Interested in records and unexpected facts? The famous Iron Fox, Lithuania’s largest animal sculpture, lives on the shore of Lake Talkša. Nearby stands the Archer, affectionately known as the Golden Boy, perched atop Lithuania’s tallest sundial. The country’s largest book, its oldest continuously operating factory, Gubernija, the Coin Room and the sweetest place in the city, Rūta – you will find them all in Šiauliai.

As you stroll along one of Europe’s first pedestrian boulevards, you will encounter a rooster that greets passers-by in different languages and keeps track of time. Look up and you will spot cats walking across the rooftops, discover three-dimensional advertising signs from the last century and enjoy a delicious snack or your favourite dish in one of the boulevard’s many cosy cafés.

In Šiauliai, almost every corner invites you to stop, take a closer look or snap a photo. If not beside a sculpture, then next to an artistic installation – or perhaps against a tattooed wall. Vibrant graffiti adorns not only the city’s walls but can even be discovered beneath its balconies.

Whether you enjoy active adventures or peaceful moments in nature, Šiauliai has plenty to offer. The Vandens namai water sports centre, wakeboarding park, horse riding, cycling paths and trails, and go-kart tracks are perfect for action seekers and adrenaline enthusiasts. Those looking for tranquillity and beautiful landscapes are always welcome on the shore of Lake Talkša, in the Botanical Garden, atop Salduvė Hillfort or at Rėkyva Beach, where spectacular sunsets create truly romantic moments.

Come to celebrate, discover, experience and enjoy!
