The mound and the then castle are undoubtedly important for the history of Lithuania because their presence did not allow the enemy to penetrate deeper into Lithuania via the land of Šiauliai. It is believed that Salduvė mound functioned as a hiding place, where residents would fleed to hide in case of danger. The hill could be reached by three hidden underwater stony roads across swamps. The former settlement located near Salduvė castle was called Šiauliai, and in the long term, the whole surrounding territory where Samogitians lived was called so.
