From July 10 to August 2, 2025, the Šiauliai Art Gallery will host a painting exhibition by the group "Giria".
The exhibition opening event will take place on Thursday, July 10, at 5:30 PM. Admission to the opening is free of charge.
The group “Giria” consists of five painters: Gustas Jagminas and Ina Budrytė from Vilnius, Romanas Averincevas and Irena Mika from Kaunas, and Algirdas Judickas from Daugai.
The name “Giria” (which means “forest” in Lithuanian) is formed from the first letters of the artists’ names. Free from rules or manifestos, the group finds a sense of community through shared exploration of what it means to create and to be with others, while remaining true to each individual’s personal worldview. “Giria” brings us together in the creative act — it’s a gathering of like-minded souls, to some extent. We are like trees in a forest — in some ways alike, yet distinctly different.
Our work is characterized by a raw expressiveness, art brut influences, and an intentionally “improper” or even primitive painting manner. Each of us has different motivations, themes, techniques, and reasons for painting — yet, like trees in a forest, we connect, sometimes through our branches, sometimes through our roots, and we thrive in the same grove.
We enjoy inviting guest artists to participate in our exhibitions, and this show is no exception. Four guest artists are contributing one work each: Dalia Mažeikytė, who paints meditative visions; Jonas Čepas, known for his expressive animal imagery; Olena Sagayda from Kyiv, Ukraine, who we met by chance and whose primitive-style paintings depict mythical and fairytale scenes that feel very familiar to us; and a powerful portrait of a woman by an unknown artist, originating from a prison art exhibition.
