ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

In 2008, I presented the exhibition “WORKS” at the Šiauliai Art Gallery. I am an author of solo exhibitions, and this was the first one of such scale — both in terms of space and the number of works shown. The exhibition was successful and became a qualitative turning point in my practice, a kind of BEFORE and AFTER reference point; everything I created later was measured against it. “WORKS TWO” is a continuation of the first exhibition, a second series, a kind of “after 20 years” version. I hope it will also become a new point of reference.

Recently, I have been sculpting clay a bit less. Instead, I have been shaping thread to create ever-new models for drawing from observation. Then I drew, created monotypes, engraved stoneware tiles, cut them, reassembled them… moving in circles.

The exhibition is about the line — both a tool and a goal — a fixed trajectory of movement, the silhouette of an object and the curve of a narrative, a form that becomes content. Different materials impose their own rules. The engraved black tile resembles gravestones and also has stylistic links to the world of tattooing. Not surprising, since the method of execution is the same: a needle striking the line.

Monotypes are comparatively gentle traces of movement trajectories.

At first, I assembled wooden constructions as a way to display ceramics; later they became independent works, even functional — a kind of small-scale architecture.

For the vases, I used the silhouette of a glass vase received as a wedding gift. Ceramic figures, heads, birds — I continue searching for new approaches to old themes; it is an effort rather than a final state.
